In my experience with starting groups, I've found it's most powerful when there is a small group that meets up in person (where possible) or via phone, and builds from there.

I think a strategy of having a ning-like site with a fairly low time commitment and using that as topic fodder for periodic (but regular) meetings could be a good way to go. It's scalable and a bit more nimble...

Yup, I've already iterated the same feeling.
I really like the idea of a real project. I'd need a little more info to comfortably sign on to either one of those topics as off the bat they don't resonate with me. That said, I just got off the phone with a very talented exhibit builder/developer from the who also has an amazing background in guitar building, oddly enough. Contact me off line if you'd like more info on him.
I love that idea. Last spring while I was getting pieces for the Power of the Prototype exhibit, I met with a number of exhibit developer folks in various venues. We talked about this very idea, and there definitely was consensus there for this sort of thing.

The thing that would make it work well is how closely you could match conference to attendees. The big conferences can be a bit much, smaller group events are golden.

Is anyone else interested in this approach?
Hmmn, am happy to write and browse in general, but if you're asking me how to build on what we're already doing, again f2f or conference calls on a monthly basis would be good.
Think this is a great idea, but a weekly frequency might be hard to sustain.
I think this is a great vehicle to step back a moment and look at larger issues. The monthly vs. weekly is better for me personally. I have also been talking with other exhibit developers here in the Bay Area who are interested in meeting up [f2f or otherwise] from time to time.
