Forum for threaded topic exploration
 
This would be simpler than the social network idea. My fear is that, as Seth! comments, it can become a big dusty archive. I'd love to hear your ideas on what would really be USEFUL for you right now and in the near future.

Usenet and a zillion threaded forums on topics from everything from shoes to astrology have proven to be incredibly useful and durable ways of exchanging ideas and building a community. Dusty archive, maybe, but if you have the appropriate fairy dust, text based forums can be incredibly useful. I say fairy dust, because it is impossible for me to identify the common traits of successful forums that I have been on.

I find forums difficult to follow, especially when they begin to splinter into lots of different discussions. Depending on the format, it can be difficult to wade through all of the postings to find what you're looking for. I would also require some sort of active reminder system to let me know when there are new postings so I can go back and catch up.
